Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a newly emerging evidence-based treatment approach that combines ketamine treatment with psychotherapy. KAP has gained a lot of popularity in recent years because of its effectiveness in providing rapid relief from symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, addiction, and suicidality. Unlike traditional talk therapy which can take months or years to produce results, Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy can lead to significant improvements within hours or days of completing a ketamine dosing session.
Ketamine is an FDA-approved medication with a long history of use as an anesthetic and analgesic. More recently it has been used in lower doses as an off label treatment option for depression, anxiety, and suicidality, among other health challenges.
Ketamine targets the root causes of mental disorders rather than merely addressing the symptoms. It has been found to be a rapid antidepressant, enhances mood, reduces (or eliminates) suicidal thoughts, reduces substance use, and increases neuroplasticity for a more resilient brain that is able to solve challenging problems that are often the root cause of mental disorders.
Ketamine has also been found to be beneficial for working professionals who are experiencing burnout, stagnation, or difficulty finding creative solutions to a variety of personal and professional challenges.
Ketamine in the context of a strong, healthy therapeutic alliance with a highly trained mental health provider creates the prime conditions needed for clients to be able to go deeper in their treatment more quickly, leading to more frequent breakthroughs and long-term improvement in a much shorter period of time compared to traditional psychotherapy approaches.
The first step is to complete a screening appointment with Dr. Michelle Perry, Clinical Psychologist, who has completed a rigorous one-year postgraduate training with Integrative Psychiatry Institute.
If approved for Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy during the initial evaluation, clients then complete a medical consultation with a medical professional at Journey Clinical to assess health history and determine eligibility for KAP.
Once psychologically and medically cleared, clients are provided with a personalized treatment plan and prescription for ketamine to be used during treatment with Dr. Michelle Perry.
The client completes 1-3 preparation sessions where they work closely with Dr. Perry to set intentions for KAP work and prepare for a successful dosing session.
The typical ketamine dosing session lasts between 1-3 hours in person. During the dosing session, the client self-administers their ketamine lozenge in a very comfortable space (think: laying down with comfortable blankets, eye shades, and listening to calming music). Clients may be prescribed between 1 and 8 dosing sessions depending on their treatment plans.
Integration is the final phase, completed after each KAP dosing session. Dr. Perry meets with clients for up to four sessions to review and process the dosing session, discuss insights and thoughts that arise, and prepare for either another dosing session or discharge depending on the client's individual treatment plan.
Most clients find Ketamine to feel pleasant. For most people, the effects last an average of 45 minutes (though this varies widely!). Ketamine makes people feel "far from" their bodies, and some report feeling "expansive." As an anesthetic, clients experience a reduction in motor and verbal abilities, but are not completely anesthetized.
Through the psychological screening and medical consultation, two providers are looking at a number of factors to ensure Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy is right for you. Currently clients must be 18 years old and a great deal of your medical and psychological health history will be reviewed prior to approval to participate in KAP.
Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy is typically not covered by insurance, and Get Centered Wellness is a self-pay practice to ensure the ultimate privacy of our clients. Session rates are as follows:
